[ She looks a little disheveled when she gets there, her eyes wide with concern and her mouth in a straight line. She also has her sidearm holstered at her hip.
Old habits and all.
The air around Gren doesn't help her feel any better. ]
Should we...
[ She gestures towards the door. Juliet doesn't want to know, either. Up until they actually check, they can both pretend like he is still in there, taking a nap or watching TV or just doing whatever it was Shawn did while everyone else worried about him. ]
[He hates this. He really hopes this is just Shawn being a fucking weirdo again and getting distracted. He knows it probably isn't though. Even Shawn has limits to his...Shawn-ness.]
Right. Let's get this fuckin' done.
[He can easily break the door down if he needs to- he kind of hopes he does, because that, at last, means Shawn's still around somewhere. He grips the handle and his heart sinks as it turns easily. The door swings open into an empty room- as if Shawn had never been there at all. Gren lets out a low not-human-at-all growl.]
[ Juliet feels her stomach turn when Gren easily opens the door, but it doesn't really hit her until she walks up behind him to find the room completely empty. Her hand moves to cover her mouth, unsuccessfully trying to obscure the half-gasp, half-sob that escapes. ]
[Gren doesn't let a lot of people get close to him, so the loss is sharp, horrible. Shawn might have been a goddamn pain in the ass, but he was his goddamn pain in the ass, and now there's a horrible, empty hole that Shawn once filled.
He wants to rant and rail- if he was alone, he probably would have punched a hole in the wall. But he's not, and as such, he turns to look at Juliet.]
I'm sorry. This is...fuckin' bullshit. You need to...sit down or something?
[ Juliet doesn't respond right away. Instead, she pushes past him into the room, examining every square foot from the obvious to the minuscule. It looks like every other empty room, like the room Shawn brought her into when he first arrived to show her how the closets worked. ]
I'm fine.
[ She's not. She's absolutely not fine. Her stomach feels like it's spinning and her heart is pounding so hard it's painful.
She's alone. She's completely alone. ]
This is good, right? [ She shakes her hands at her sides, as if it would be enough to push out this horrible feeling inside of her. ] He went home. He's fine at home. We want people to be able to go home, right?
[ It should have been rhetorical, but coming out of her mouth, it sounds like a genuine question. Mostly because she needs Gren to tell her it's good, because everything in her heart is saying that it's not. ]
[Gren can always be counted on to tell it like it is. No playing pretend when this asshole is around. He shrugs in response to her question. ]
Depends on the person. I mean, Shawn ain't going into anything shitty, right? That's...something. But it don't make it any less really fuckin' awful for people who are left behind. You're allowed to feel shitty about it.
[He watches her carefully, trying to judge her mood. He kind of hopes she screams, rants and rails against this bullshit, because he's pretty sure she needs it. ]
No, no, he's fine. I mean, we just wrapped up a case, things were great at work, and he said his mom had just shown up but he didn't...
[ She never did get the specifics on that. She should have asked. But that couldn't possibly be a bad thing - certainly not worth being worried about his welfare, at any rate, especially compared to the kind of things others had waiting for them back home.
But Gren's right. It doesn't make it better. ]
I just got here. He's been here for months. Why now? I have no idea what to do. God, Gren, I'm here alone and I have no idea what to do!
[ Juliet isn't the screaming, ranting, or railing type. But a neurotic, teary-eyed meltdown? She can do that. ]
[It doesn't sound like he's headed to some awful near-death experience or anything, at least.
It would be easier if Juliet did go off the rails with this. That kind of thing he can deal with. Teary-eyed meltdowns are not his forte at all. ]
It's now because Wonderland's a fuckin' spiteful piece of shit that ruins people's happiness. [He lets out a ragged sigh.] But you ain't alone. You got me, you got Misty. And, I dunno. We can go get really fuckin' drunk if you want?
[This is what Gren CAN offer. Alcohol and/or violence. The best ways to handle this problem, clearly. ]
[ She's doing her best not to cry too hard, mostly because that will just lead to panic and Juliet knows panicking is the last thing she wants to do in any situation. But she can't hold back the few tears that are streaming down her face now, her eyes glancing around the room as if she can somehow will it to look like Shawn's again.
But it doesn't. Juliet turns to look back at Gren, sniffing audibly. His assurance that she isn't alone means everything to her, particularly because she has never felt anymore alone--even since she arrived in Wonderland--than she does right now. ]
I wouldn't mind getting drunk. [ At least it's a better alternative than feeling sorry for herself. ] I could also use a hug.
[ She sniffs again, clearly waiting for him to offer. ]
[Oh jeez, there's tears and sniffing and she wants a fucking hug. He stares at the ceiling for a moment, as if perhaps some divine being will drop down and do the hugging for him. It doesn't happen though, so he lets out a grumbling sigh, opening his arm for her.]
Fine, you can have a fuckin' hug. If it'll make you feel better or shit.
[Gren takes the tie, flicking it over his shoulder so he can fix R's collar first. That's the problem when you have one less arm, everything takes twice as long.]
Last one I went to ended pretty badly, so I don't go to them no more. What with all the eating Nords and shit. Can't fuckin' stand parties.
[He puts the tie around R's neck, slowly working on fix it up.]
I'm probably gonna go stay in the lake til it's over.
[ She rushes over to him, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her face into his shirt. Hugs absolutely always make her feel better, even if they don't fix everything. ]
Oh, God! [ She pulls back, staring up at him. ] Gren, I'm so sorry! You must be so upset. Shawn's your best friend.
[ She hugs him tightly again. At least she knows that she'll see Shawn again when she finally goes home. Gren doesn't even have that. ]
[He pats her back, somewhat awkwardly. He is not the best at hugs at all, even if he wasn't missing an arm. She's right, of course, he hates this. It hurts more than he thought it would. It's like the pain of losing Woody again- except this time it wasn't Gren pushing him away, fate had done that for him.]
Yeah. Well. It fuckin' sucks, but there's sweet F-A we can do about it, other than gettin' fucking wasted.
[ Juliet nods against him, finally pulling away and taking a deep breath. This is going to be more difficult than she ever imagined, but she also knew in her heart that it couldn't be avoided. All relationships had a risk of breaking, whether or not it was in Wonderland. But for Juliet, at least, taking the risk had always been worth it. ]
Come on. [ She pats her cheeks dry before she musters a smile. ] Let's go get so intoxicated we can't see straight.
[It's funny, how it never even occurred to him that Gren might not be able to do this with one hand. He manages everything else well enough, so why not tying a tie? He ducks his head slightly with a small, timid smile as his collar is fixed up, standing patiently. He's good at being patient.]
No, I'm not a people person. But that ain't why I avoid it.
[He finishes the tie, setting the collar right again. There you go, R, you look great.]
I got really fuckin' good hearing. Parties are like having a sack of fuckin' bricks being slammed the hell into my skull repeatedly. Hence why my whole story with the...uh Nord murdering and all that shit. I just try and get as far the hell away from the noise as I can these days.
Oh... [R's a quiet person by nature, but he subconsciously lowers the volume of his voice still further with that knowledge. It's not something that he minds. Raising his voice has always been something he's found difficult, unless he's angry.]
That... that makes sense. Is it quiet at the bottom of the lake?
[Gren catches the lowered volume, and his lips curve in a quick, grateful smile.]
Yeah, sound don't carry so well underwater. Plus it's far enough from the mansion it'll be quieter anyway. I'll probably still hear some fuckin' noise, but it won't be as bad as being in the mansion for it all.
[ That's about as empathetically angry as she can be, and even though she doesn't exactly share Gren's fondness for colorful language, she still feels like she has every right to be mad, and sad. And hopefully really drunk soon.
She points to the door, her mouth set in a straight line as she commands him. ]
